Ride Sharing/Carpooling

The MTA and New York State Department of Transportation have prepared a network of designated carpool park & ride lots, including at various state parks and LIRR rail stations. It is anticipated that HOV lane access will require three or more passengers in a vehicle. Ask neighbors to share a ride with you, or connect with others willing to carpool using the 511NYRideshare web site.

HOV Lane Changes

The HOV lane restrictions on the Long Island Expressway will change. At least three people (driver and two passengers) must be in the vehicle to use the lane. Nassau and Suffolk police will enforce the change.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels

Roadway and toll plaza lane capacity at all major crossings will be optimized to meet any additional traffic demands, and peak travel direction will be favored wherever possible.

All customers are strongly encouraged to use E-ZPass to save time, money and gas, and please note that E-ZPass is required to travel in the Bus/HOV lanes that lead to the Queens Midtown and Hugh L. Carey (formerly Brooklyn-Battery) tunnels.  Visit www.ezpassny.com or call 1-800-333-8655 for information.

The most up-to-date information on MTA service status is always available at www.mta.info. For immediate notice of traffic conditions at MTA Bridges and Tunnels crossings, sign up for email or text alerts at http://www.mymtaalerts.com/LoginC.aspx

BUS TRAVEL OPTIONS

The MTA has worked with Long Island bus companies to establish a network of 350 buses that will shuttle customers from eight locations in Nassau and Suffolk counties to three major subway stations in Queens. The shuttle bus locations include seven LIRR stations and Nassau Community College.

The MTA expects the buses would be able to carry 15,000 customers – twice as many as the 7,000 people carried by buses during the 1994 LIRR labor outage.

The buses would operate during rush hours only, and only in the peak direction of travel. They will run into New York City between 4-7 a.m. and return to Long Island between 3-7 p.m. Disabled customers will also be able to use Access-A-Ride vehicles available at those locations.

Buses would travel along these routes:

In Suffolk County:

-Buses would pick up passengers at the Ronkonkoma and Deer Park LIRR stations and connect to the 7 subway station at Mets-Willets Point / Citi Field.

In Nassau County:

-Buses would pick up passengers at the Manhasset LIRR station and connect to the 7 subway station at Mets-Willets Point / Citi Field.
-Buses would pick up passengers at the Seaford, Bellmore and Freeport LIRR stations, as well as Nassau Community College, and connect to the A subway station at Howard Beach
-Buses would pick up passengers at the Hicksville LIRR station and connect to the M and R subway station at Woodhaven Boulevard

SUBWAY TIPS

The subway transfer points listed below can feed lines which can absorb additional riders. Certain lines are already crowded and may not be able to accommodate all additional riders.

New York City Transit makes the following recommendations:

At high volume stations, crowd control measures by the Police may be in force to prevent overcrowding on platforms and on trains. Customers can expect lines and extra waiting times at these stations.

Customers are encouraged, if possible, to use subway lines other than the E Line and F Line which are heavily utilized.

Lower Manhattan: take the J Line and Z Line lines

Midtown Manhattan: take the M and R lines

Purchase and/or reload MetroCards in advance to avoid long lines.
$5 and $25 cards are sold at all LIRR ticket offices. A list of additional MetroCard vendors is available on the MTA website. (Remember, a $1 fee will be charged for the purchase of a new MetroCard)

Please expect longer travel times. Consider leaving earlier or later to avoid peak rush hour crowds.
