The Metropolitan Transportation Authority released a report Tuesday that outlines service cuts for most letter trains on the weekends.

According to transit officials, the A, D, F, G, J, M, N, Q and R trains will run every 10 minutes, rather than every eight minutes on the weekends. The E train, which is the most crowded, will run every seven and a half to 10 minutes, depending on the time of day.

New York City Transit spokesman Paul Fleuranges says the service slowdowns are a result of necessary construction and repairs that will take an undeterminable amount of time.

A transit official says the slowdowns will be permanent, suggesting the service cuts are not solely due to the MTA budget deficit, but rather the result of overdue repairs.

The MTA says straphangers should expect delays and more riders. They estimate about 10 to 18 extra passengers in each car on the weekends. The MTA has not released the date the service cuts will go into affect.
