The MTA announced that it will no longer run temporary bus service at three of its park and ride locations – North Hempstead Beach Park, Roosevelt Field Mall and Bethpage State Park. The changes will begin Thursday.
The MTA is encouraging customers who were using the North Hempstead Beach Park or Roosevelt Field Mall park and rides to now use the Nassau Coliseum lot.
Despite the lack of bus ridership thus far during the so-called "Summer of Hell" repairs to aging infrastructure at Penn Station, some commuter advocates say the MTA prematurely made the decision to cut service.
"I don't think two days is a real good period of time to judge by. They probably should have let it go longer before making judgments on that," says Peter Haynes, of the LIRR Commuters Campaign.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo spoke with News 12 Long Island and said the decision to scale back buses makes sense.
"It seems like the trains are working very well, but this is still very early on…I'm not willing to unroll all of the precautions we put in place just yet," said Gov. Cuomo.
MTA Chairman Joe Lhota has repeatedly said that he will constantly be assessing the situation, which means adding and subtracting resources in different locations as need be.
Amtrak says that the work at Penn Station will take just two months to complete, but Gov. Cuomo told News 12, "I take that with two grains of salt."
