Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials say a conductor is fighting to recover after being viciously assaulted Wednesday evening.
The Vice President of the Transport Workers Union Eric Loegel told News 12 the conductor was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/King County with injuries to his head, chest and back after he was attacked following a dispute.
He says it happened on the Beverly Road No. 5 train platform around 7 a.m.
He says a man was holding a train door open and when the train was stopped on the platform, the conductor went to see what was wrong with the door, and that's when he got into an argument with that suspect. He says that's when the assault happened.
They say the conductor told them he was punched and also hit with some kind of object.
A spokesperson from the MTA told News 12 in a part, "Tonight's assault of a conductor who was simply doing his job is despicable. The conductor was working to keep customers safe and service moving when he was attacked."
News 12 is told the conductor was a three-year veteran of the MTA and in his 30s. News 12 is told he is from the Bronx.
Police are continuing their search for the suspect in connection to the incident.
