The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is deploying more of its police officers to the Babylon Long Island Rail Road station over complaints of drugs and other sordid activity.
The increase in patrols is in response to a letter the MTA received from state Sen. Phil Boyle and Assemblyman Mike LiPetri.
State lawmakers say they’ve received numerous complains from commuters about panhandling and alcohol and drug use at the station, including its ticket room, platform and waiting rooms.
"We want to make sure we clean it up to make sure we have a community that is welcoming to all family and residents," LiPetri told News 12 by phone.
Local leaders say not only is it a quality-of-life issue for commuters, but it also puts a strain on the fire department and local hospital.
Ken Russo says the problem isn’t limited to only Babylon.
“It’s something that’s kind of dominated each and every one of these Long Island Rail Road stations," Russo says. "I wish there was something that was done a little bit more for their well-being."
The MTA says it is boosting patrols of both uniformed and plainclothes officers.
