A Mount Sinai man helped his wife deliver their baby inside their kitchen.
It was a little after midnight when Jane Pappalardo's water broke, and her husband Mike, a teacher and basketball coach at Mount Sinai High School, was ready to take her to the hospital. But as they were packing the car, Jane says she knew the baby was quickly coming.
"I just knew we weren't going to make it," she says. "I didn't want to get in the car."
With the help of a 911 operator, Mike Pappalardo delivered the couple's second child, Bryce Charles, on their kitchen floor.
"It was scary, but at certain points in your life you just have to step up," he says.
Mike also says the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby's neck. First responders rushed the family to Stony Brook Children's Hospital.
The Pappalardos say they look forward to sharing Bryce's birthday story with him when he's older.
