Motorcyclist pleads not guilty to DWI in wife’s death
A Bay Shore man pleaded not guilty today to a DWI charge in the motorcycle crash that killed his wife.
Megan Proctor was killed early Sunday morning in a motorcycle crash on Sunrise Highway in West Islip.
The 26-year-old was riding with her husband, Michael Proctor.
Proctor pleaded not guilty from his bed at Good Samaritan Hospital.
Prosecutors say Proctor and his wife were headed to a friend's house at 12:30 a.m. when he lost control of his motorcycle. They say Megan Proctor was thrown from the back of the vehicle before Michael Proctor crashed into a guardrail.
Prosecutors say Proctor admitted to having two or three beers before the crash
Investigators are still waiting for the results of Proctor's blood alcohol test. They say he did fail a field sobriety test and was seen speeding down the highway that night.
The victim's mother admits the couple had brushes with the law involving drinking and driving.
"They were 25, 26 years old and they liked to party, and for any 25-year-olds that are driving around ... this is what you could do to somebody else," said Maureen Lawless, the victim's mother.
Prosecutors say that Proctor suffered a broken disc and a few broken toes in the crash. He is being held on $100,000 bail. Charges are expected to be upgraded.
