The Brooklyn mother whose 1-year-old child was ripped from her arms at an HRA center has been granted her release.
The Brooklyn Public Defender's office says a borough Supreme Court judge granted their motion for Jazmine Headley's release from Rikers Island. The announcement comes shortly after the Brooklyn district attorney announced he is dropping the charges against Headley.
"All the support I've been getting in New York, just all the people who is supporting me," says Headley. "I haven't gotten to read all of the articles just all of the great things and all the love and I'm accepting it, and I am just so grateful to everyone and I'm just happy to be free and I just need to see my boy."
The Brooklyn Public Defender's Office says Jazmine Headley had taken a day off work on Friday to find out why her son's child day care benefit was cut off.
News 12 is told Headley was sitting on the floor because there weren't enough chairs. She was asked to move, then security called 911 and the situation escalated, according to sources. She was eventually arrested.
The incident was caught on camera.
"The consequences this young and desperate mother has already suffered as a result of this arrest far outweigh any conduct that may have led to it," says District Attorney Eric Gonzalez. "She and her baby have been traumatized, she was jailed on an unrelated warrant and may face additional collateral consequences."
Headley had faced charges including resisting arrest before the DA's office declined to prosecute.
The commissioner of the HRA says the security guards who called police are on leave.
