A Sayville mother is outraged over uniforms for the girls cross country team at Sayville High School.

Karen Gaconnier took to Facebook, posting that the uniform essentially looks like underwear. She says the brief-style uniform bottoms are inappropriate, and believes that they sexually exploit the female athletes.

Gaconnier created an online petition, calling on the Section XI school sports governing body to change the uniforms.

"They are not allowed to wear their underwear to school, it's against the dress code -- yet they are told to put on a jersey representing their school, go out in the public, and go run around. That doesn't make any sense," she says.

The superintendent says the uniform is legal and has been approved by the state's Public High Schools Athletic Association.

He also says athletes have a choice to wear the running brief or something longer that runs across the thigh.

Gaconnier's petition had nearly 900 signatures by Monday evening.
