More details are emerging about an on-field incident that led to the suspension of the Shoreham-Wading River High School varsity football coach.
The mother of an Islip football player tells News 12 that head Shoreham coach Aden Smith grabbed her son in the neck area and started shaking him back and forth.
The coach, Aden Smith, has been removed from the football field pending an investigation. The Shoreham-Wading River School District says the incident happened back on Aug. 30 during a scrimmage between Islip and Shoreham-Wading River.
There was a scuffle between players, and during that altercation, mother Adele Valenzuela says her 17-year-old son, who is a player on the Islip team, was grabbed by the Shoreham-Wading River coach.
In addition to coaching football, Smith is also a teacher in the Longwood School District. News 12 spoke with one of his former students who says he doesn't believe Smith would do anything malicious.
"He was always a good dude, good coach, liked his kids, had personal relationships with all the kids," says former student Joe Martuccio. "I think it's a little ridiculous, it's a contact sport. Coach probably didn't want to hurt him, didn't want to do anything excessive."
Valenzuela, who did not want to appear on camera, says her son was not injured and that he will continue to play football. But she told News 12 over the phone that she's pleased with the way the situation is being handled.
"I'm happy he's been removed from the football field. I don't want the guy to lose his other job, but he doesn't belong on the football field," says Valenzuela.
It's not clear if Smith could face any criminal charges in connection to the incident.
