More Suffolk schools find legionella bacteria
News 12 Long Island has learned that more cooling towers in Suffolk have tested positive for legionella bacteria.
The Legionnaire's scare has now spread to Mount Sinai High School and Sachem High School East, as well as the Seneca and Sequoya middle schools.
Mount Sinai School District says the testing and sanitizing of the cooling tower was completed on Saturday.
According to the Suffolk County Health Department, the water in the cooling towers is part of a closed system. They do not mix with the sanitary or drinking water supply. Still, some parents and students who spoke to News 12 say they did not feel safe inside the building.
"If they want children to be safe in school, they should go ahead and make sure there's proof, because you never know," says Mt. Sinai junior Samanta Mena.
Legionanaires' disease affects the lungs and is especially dangerous for the elderly and people with chronic diseases.
As News 12 has reported, cooling towers in Smithtown, Connetquot, Hauppauge and Middle Country districts have also tested positive for legionella bacteria.
