A Merrick wife was able to donate a kidney to her husband after he was diagnosed with a chronic disease.

When Sheila and Matt Kuschner got married 32 years ago, they had no idea of a perfect match they really were.

Matt Kuschner was told by doctors in 2017 that he had high blood pressure and that his kidney was failing. He says he would either need dialysis or have to wait several years to find a kidney donor.

However, when Sheila Kuschner decided to be tested, she turned out to be a compatible kidney donor for her husband.

"I was shocked, I really had no thoughts at all that I would be a match," she says.

The transplant surgeries were performed successfully on Jan. 15. The couple says it was not only love, but also fate that brought them together in 1986.

"We didn't know each other until our parents introduced us on a blind date and we fell in love," says Matt Kuschner. "That was 32 years ago, and she is my soulmate and my superhero."

The couple says they hope sharing their story will emphasize how important it is to consider becoming an organ donor.
