A memo was reportedly leaked to the mother of a stabbing victim at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation about a voicemail from the suspect's mother, telling school officials she was concerned that her child had brought a knife to school.
According to The Daily News, the memo from 2014 - written by the school's dean - describes the voicemail left by the Abel Cedeno's mother.
In that memo, the school's administrator writes "She informed me that he has been bringing knives to school. The voicemail was out of concern for our students and staff safety because he has a history of pulling knives on his family. This is an issue that needs to be addressed immediately."
Three years later, as News 12 reported, Cedeno was arrested for stabbing two of his classmates: Arianne Labboy and Matthew McCree, who lost his life in the incident.
"Clearly this memo three years ago before Matthew was killed demonstrates that the Department of Education knew they had a problem and did nothing," says Sanford Rubenstein, the attorney representing McCree's family.
The attorney representing Cedeno says that in 2014 his client had been the victim of threats, adding in a statement, "When his mother discovered that Abel was bringing that butter knife to school, she went to the school to complain that her son was being bullied and queried why was Abel forced to have to bring it to school."
Cedeno will be back in court March 6.
