The Hempstead School Board held a closed-door meeting Thursday night to interview candidates for superintendent.

School Board President Lamont Johnson and other board members began interviewing candidates to replace longtime Superintendent Susan Johnson, whose contract expires in June.

The district and Susan Johnson's leadership are facing intense scrutiny under the state's receivership law.

Both Hempstead High School and Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School are under receivership for dismal graduation rates and underperformance.

Other lingering issues have been the lack of scheduling and class options and overcrowding.

The state attorney general also found that the district, under Susan Johnson's leadership, turned away immigrant students even though the law mandates that all school-age children are entitled to an education in the district in which they live.

The school board president says Susan Johnson can reapply for her position if she wishes. News 12 Long Island reached out to her, but she declined to comment.
