As a potentially dangerous winter storm approaches New Jersey, members of the medical profession are hunkering down at their various hospitals in order to serve the state.
“We often see folks come in with injuries related to slip and falls or car accidents,” says Hackensack University Medical Center Chief of Emergency Medicine Dr. Joseph Underwood.
Underwood says that this is why it is important to keep a full staff on when it snows – and that means making the hospital comfortable for those who have to stay.
“It’s like creating a large living quarter for 100 or so people on the fly,” he says.
Underwood says that the hospital is able to provide employees with a place to sleep, shower, eat and also relax until it is safe for them to go home. He says that while it may not be ideal, being together is not always a bad time.
"We have a great team and people genuinely enjoy the company of others, so when we hunker down here, we often have fun and enjoy the time,” Underwood says.
Underwood says that in situations like this weekend’s storm, their busiest days are typically the ones following the storm. He says that officials are actively making sure they are ready for a potential rush on Monday.
