A Mastic man is accused of driving drunk, striking a man and leaving the scene before later calling 911 to report the crash.
Police say Robert Slawinski, 47, was driving his Jeep around 10:20 p.m. when he struck the victim, who had been walking on the shoulder of Old Town Road in Coram.
According to prosecutors, Slawinski and his passenger didn't stop to help the man, 48-year-old Anthony Loiodici, of Medford. Instead, police say Slawinski drove home and it wasn’t until an hour later that his passenger convinced him to call 911 and say he had “hit something.”
When police showed up to his home, they say Slawinski failed field sobriety tests and blew a .15 on a breathalyzer, nearly twice the legal limit.
Slawinski claimed to police that he had just started drinking when he got home after the crash. But prosecutors say they have statements from Slawinski's companion and from a bartender who served them that indicate Slawinski was drinking before the crash.
The damage to Slawinski’s car was extensive and prosecutors say he must have known he’d hit something.
In court Monday, the judge noted that Slawinski has three prior DWI arrests. Slawinski was ordered held on $50,000 bail.
Slawinski's legal aid attorney had asked for lower bail, saying that Slawinski is a longtime member of the community and a former member of the U.S. Navy.
Prosecutors say the charges against Slawinski could be upgraded.
