A Mastic Beach man says his dog was attacked by a pit bull that came onto his property.
"She let out a sound I have nightmares about. It sounded like she was screaming," says Bill Caffrey, speaking about his 5-year-old golden retriever Ziva.
He says Ziva needed numerous stitches after being attacked by a pit bull on his enclosed porch Wednesday.
"There's a little spot down there on the porch where she can fit her snout, and that's where the pit bull was able to jump off and grab her," he says.
Tom Parker, Ziva's other owner, says a woman across the street saw the whole thing. She claims the pit bull got away from a man on a bike who was pulling the dog on a rope.
"The dog ripped him off of the bicycle, so he was getting up and brushing himself off," Parker says. "And he came over here and the dog had latched onto her face. He was trying to get her off and the owner was trying to get her off."
Parker says after the pit bull let go of Ziva, the owner apologized and took off, leaving them with an injured dog and a nearly $1,000 veterinarian bill.
Caffrey and Parker say they hope the owner of the dog will come forward and take responsibility.
A spokesman for the Town of Brookhaven says there was a delay in getting in contact with Caffrey due to an incorrect phone number. He says an animal control officer will get a bite report on Saturday.
