Massive tree misses Port Jefferson home by inches
A massive tree missed taking out a house in Port Jefferson during an early morning storm Tuesday.
As the storms rolled in, resident Mia Halladay told News 12 that she could hear rumbling and knew the tree was going to come down.
The tree, a 150-foot tulip poplar, missed Halladay's home by inches. However, the tree did partially land in a neighbor's home.
As News 12 has reported, many trees in the Port Jefferson area were downed due to the wicked weather that passed through the area overnight. The high winds ripped the roof off of The Infant Jesus Church in Port Jefferson, a 105-year-old building. The roof had survived many storms, including Superstorm Sandy.
Port Jefferson Mayor Margo Garant took cover in her kitchen Tuesday morning as several trees fell on her property. She's declared a state of emergency in the village.
The storm also did major damage in places like Setauket, knocking down trees into homes, across roads and pulling down power lines.
In Wading River, the high winds knocked down a large tree at Joe Kudreyko's home, crushing three cars and damaging a fourth in his driveway.
"Thank God no one got hurt. We're OK," Kudreyko told News 12.
