Police say a man with a gun attempted to hold up a Port Jefferson Station gas station early Saturday morning, and workers say he tried to open fire but the gun did not go off.
It happened at the Speedway station on Route 112 around 2:30 a.m. Police say the masked man entered the shop, displayed a gun and demanded cash.
Workers tell News 12 that the thief twice pulled the trigger, but the weapon apparently jammed. They say the clerk saw a chance to fight back and pushed the suspect outside.
The would-be robber took off on foot without any proceeds. Police say no one was injured.
Police say the same thief is believed to have held up a Sunoco just down the road in Port Jefferson Station back on Oct. 7.
And it marks the latest in a rash of hold-ups in Suffolk County. It's at least the sixth time since Oct. 5 that a gas station or convenience shop was targeted in the county.
So far, no arrests have been made.
The early morning incident has some neighbors concerned.
"It's very frightening," says resident Karen Karaptis. "I live just a few blocks away and I can't imagine these things are going on in my neighborhood where I've lived for 40 years. It's just very upsetting to me."
Anyone with information on the incident -- or on any of the recent crimes -- is being urged to call Suffolk County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
