Legislator Laura Curran has claimed victory over Comptroller George Maragos in the Democratic primary for Nassau County executive.
She called her candidacy a fresh start for Nassau County.
“I'm grateful for everything all of you have done to send a clear message that Nassau County is ready to chart a new path,” she said. “We're ready to put an end to the culture of corruption and make our government live up to the greatness of the people who live here. I announced my candidacy with a simple belief that there is a better future for Nassau County. We can end this pervasive culture of corruption. We can do away with the entrenched status quo and if we work together, we can give Nassau the fresh start it so sorely deserves and believes. Tonight has confirmed that belief.”
Curran's supporters gathered at Nawlins Seafood Company in anticipation of a celebration. The Baldwin native spent primary day shaking hands in an effort to get last-minute voters to the polls.
Curran has four years of experience as a legislator and had the backing of the county's Democratic Party leaders. She says fighting corruption would be her priority, if elected.
Maragos, who has held the comptroller's office for eight years, was running as an outsider. Last September, Maragos switched parties from Republican to Democrat to run for the county's highest office.
Curran says she is eager to get her message out on the campaign trail and go head to head against Republican nominee Jack Martins. She says her campaign begins first thing in the morning.
