Manorhaven residents rev up debate over parking
A crowded meeting in Manorhaven Wednesday night addressed overcrowded street-side parking in the North Shore village.
As the public meeting went on, it grew more contentious. Resident Barbara Mallon even called police at one point, claiming the packed room was creating a fire hazard.
Residents complain that out-of-state and out-of-town drivers often take up limited street parking in the village. Officials outlined some potential ways to address the overcrowded streets. One proposal from trustee Ken Kraft would create parking permit stickers for village residents.
Some locals say it's a good idea, especially in the summer months, when visitors from other towns and hamlets spend time in the waterfront village, alongside Manhasset Bay.
Kraft says residents have complained about having to park far away from their homes when returning from work at night.
"We had people come down, a husband and wife," he says. "They were very upset. She gets home at midnight. She has to walk a block and a half to park her car."
Still, other residents criticized the plan, citing privacy issues and complaining that the village does not enforce its current codes and regulations.
The village mayor says another meeting on the issue will be held next week.
