The need for more hospital beds in New York City has prompted the transformation of Manhattan’s Javits Center into a temporary hospital.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced even more sites as possible temporary hospitals but says the state hasn’t received permission just yet.
The center is now home to 1,000 beds to help alleviate the burden on the overwhelmed healthcare system.

Right now, the state needs 140,000 beds and it only has 53,000. All hospitals will increase capacity by 50% and some to 100%.
FEMA and the Army Corps have so far planned to build four makeshift hospitals which are the Javits Center and one each in Suffolk, Nassau and Westchester counties.
In the Bronx, the state and Army Corps identified the New York Expo Center, which is a 90,000 square-foot site. In Brooklyn, the cruise terminal in Red Hook was identified, which is 182,000 square-feet.
In Queens, Aqueduct Race Track was identified and the College of Staten Island.
All facilities plan to have 1,000 beds each.
