A Levittown man was sentenced to four months in jail and five years of probation after admitting to trying to kill his dog last year.
News 12 Long Island reported last December that neighbors saw Michael Gallagher, a father of two, try to strangle and torture the family's German shepherd named Bella by using a zip tie, a garbage bag and a shovel.
Gallagher's attorney said his client's alcoholism played a major role in those actions.
"My client is remorseful and sad for what occurred," said Lawrence Carra. "He'd certainly like to take it all back, but that's not how things work."
The dog was so badly hurt that she had to be euthanized.
Gallagher's wife was the only person in court today in support of him.
His next-door neighbor said Gallagher has always been a problem.
"He used to clean up his dogs droppings and toss them over the fence," said Bob Mabanta. "I don't think he's a nice person at all."
As part of his sentence, Gallagher must attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. He is also prohibited from owning any other pets.
