Man wanted for allegedly attacking NICE bus driver in Franklin Square
Police say a Nassau NICE bus driver was attacked by a passenger after a confrontation over a missed stop, and now they're trying to track down the suspect.
Authorities say a male passenger punched the driver in the face on the N6 bus in Franklin Square on Sunday. The man created a disturbance after accusing the driver of missing his stop. The driver gave the man an opportunity to get off, but he refused, then allegedly punched the driver, police say.
"The bus driver was just going along his normal route," says Nassau Police Inspector Kenneth Lack. "I think the bus driver tried to be accommodating to this person."
It comes just one month after another NICE bus driver was attacked by a female passenger in a melee that was caught on cellphone video. In that incident, police say the woman hit the driver because she would not make an unscheduled stop.
Workers' rights organization Long Island Jobs With Justice is urging the bus company to take steps to prevent future incidents. "One of our recommendations for the company will be that they increase the amount of security on the buses for the drivers, whether that includes partitions or emergency buttons or anything that can expand those safety measures," says Anita Halasz.
NICE says it's looking into the feasibility of installing partitions in the buses to protect drivers.
