Man taken into custody in hit-and-run that killed Jersey City teens
Authorities in Hudson County have arrested the driver accused in a hit-and-run that killed two teenage boys in Jersey City.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office says that Rashaun Bell, 20, was taken into police custody Friday.
Bell is accused of running over Dickinson High School students Elionel Jimenez, 15, and Alexander Rosas-Flores, 16, who were riding on one bike together after school Wednesday. Bell allegedly left the scene of the crash.
Investigators said the boys were struck with such force that Rosas-Flores was thrown over a nearby fence onto Routes 1 and 9 below the crash scene. Jimenez was pronounced dead at the scene Wednesday. Rosas-Flores died at a hospital Thursday afternoon.
Family and friends gathered at the Jimenez’s home Friday afternoon to mourn the loss of the two teens. Through an interpreter, Jimenez’s mother shared her anger toward Bell.
“She would feel like beating him up because he killed an innocent child,” the interpreter said.
Dickinson High School students also wore black to school on Friday to honor their deceased classmates. Friends of the two boys said they cannot understand why anyone would leave the scene of such a terrible crash.
"He has no heart because those kids were friends of mine, and I loved them dearly,” said David Calderon.
Bell is expected to make a court appearance Monday. Officials say that one of Bell’s passengers is also facing charges.
