Man linked to al-Qaida 'self-radicalized' on LI
Revelations that a man raised on Long Island aided al-Qaida has sent shockwaves through the Suffolk neighborhood where he once worshipped.
Authorities say Bryant Neal Vinas, who grew up in Patchogue and worshipped in Selden, confessed to providing al-Qaida with details about the LIRR and New York City's transit system. Vinas also helped carry out a rocket attack on U.S. forces in Afghanistan last year, authorities say.
Law enforcement sources tell News 12 Long Island Vinas apparently started checking jihadist Web sites and inquired about jihad while living on the Island. Sources also say he was self-radicalized, meaning he wasn't recruited by terrorists.
The identity of the 26-year-old Vinas was kept secret since his indictment last year. Court papers show he pleaded guilty in January and remains in U.S. custody in New York.
AP wire services were used in this report.
