Man found guilty for role in toxic dumping case
The man accused of helping a friend find places to dump toxic debris in Suffolk County was found guilty of several charges Friday.
Ronald Cianciulli, owner of Atlas Asphalt, was found guilty of four of the six charges he was facing, including endangering public health, safety or the environment, and operating a solid waste management facility without a permit.
Prosecutors say Cianciulli helped businessman Thomas Datre Jr. find places to dump toxic material, including at his Deer Park business and at another nearby property. News 12 is told that asbestos and at least two dozen hazardous substances were found in the materials dumped in Deer Park.
As News 12 has reported, Datre Jr. pleaded guilty in March to dumping the debris. Prosecutors say GPS data tracked a number of Datre's trucks making trips to the Atlas Asphalt property and another location down the road.
Prosecutors say Cianciulli played a key role in the dumping scheme. "If not for Ronald Cianciulli, Thomas Datre would never have had access to the site, and they were all benefiting from this," says Assistant District Attorney Michelle Pitman.
Cianciulli's attorney told News 12 they're shocked by the verdict, saying, "Tom Datre took responsibility for the mistakes that he made. There is no justification for holding Ron Cianciulli accountable for Datre's mistakes. "
Cianciulli could face up to four years in prison when he is sentenced in August.
