A man was shot by police in Morris Heights after they say he charged at officers with a weapon.
Officials say the officers were responding to a harassment call on the fourth floor of a halfway house on Grand Avenue Sunday night.
When they arrived, they say 32-year-old Kawaski Trawick was holding a knife in one hand and what appeared to be a full-sized broom handle wrapped with tape in the other.
Authorities say the incident unfolded around 11 p.m. when they were responding to an individual harassing people at the Hill House Halfway House.
News 12 is told two officers made their way to the fourth floor of the halfway house with the superintendent and knocked on the man's door before entering his apartment. One officer then turned on his body cam. They say the officers spoke with Trawick for one minute and nine seconds before he attacked.
Trawick allegedly lunged himself toward the officers with the knife and broom in his hands. One of the officers released his stun gun, trying to stop him. But even after he was on the floor, authorities say Trawick got up and tried again to attack the two officers. That's when the officer fired his gun four times and shot Trawick in the chest.
First responders rushed Trawick to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The officers were not injured, but they were taken to the hospital for an evaluation.
Police say they have no reason to believe the suspect was emotionally disturbed.
Police are investigating the incident.
