A man convicted for his role in a deadly 2013 carjacking at the Short Hills Mall was sentenced to life in prison Monday.
Basim Henry, 36, will have to serve 65 years in prison before he is eligible for parole.
Henry was convicted earlier this year in the murder and carjacking of Dustin Friedland.
Police said Henry and three other men approached 30-year-old Friedland and his wife, Jamie Friedland, and ordered them out of a Range Rover that belonged to Friedland’s father.
Jamie Friedland got out of the car and was unharmed. Police said Dustin Friedland was shot in the head before the four men drove off in the Range Rover. Dustin Friedland later died at a hospital.
Authorities said the stolen SUV was recovered a short time later in Newark, and a week later, Henry was arrested in Easton, Pennsylvania. Police said he admitted that he drove to the mall with the three other men with the intent of stealing a Range Rover.
Although Henry was not the gunman, prosecutors argued successfully that he was well aware that Hanif Thompson, Dustin Friedland's alleged shooter, was armed.
