Man charged in 1999 Hicksville homicide
A man allegedly involved in a Hicksville homicide in 1999 was arrested in March and extradited Friday to the United States.
According to detectives, Balkumar Singh, 38, was attending a wedding at the Masonic Temple on West Nicholai Street when he became involved in a verbal altercation with another guest.
Detectives say Singh shot 19-year-old Abzal Khan multiple times with an automatic handgun outside the temple. They say Khan died in the street, and Singh fled the scene.
Authorities report that Singh was picked up as an illegal immigrant using an alias in Trinidad and placed in custody March 27. They say an international background check revealed that he was wanted in the U.S. on a murder charge.
The U.S. Marshals Office made the arrangements for Singh's extradition back to the United States, which was executed on Friday.
Inshan Khan, the victim's father, says that although he has been heartbroken since losing his son, he can now start to feel some relief and a sense of justice.
"He has to pay the penalty for what he has done to my son," he says. "I feel peace of mind that he is the culprit that killed my son. He has been caught and he will be returned to justice."
The younger Khan would have turned 34 this year.
Singh is charged with second-degree murder and will be arraigned on Monday.
