The Coast Guard says a man, a boy and a dog were rescued Saturday morning when their boat capsized off the coast of Cedar Beach near the Fire Island Inlet.
Crews responded after a distress call came in from a good Samaritan around 8:30 a.m.
The Coast Guard says a 47-year-old man, a boy and their dog were pulled from the water. The child was wearing a life jacket, but the man and dog were not.
The man and the boy were taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, but there's no word on their current condition. The man's wife picked up the rescued dog, named Pepper.
The Coast Guard is reminding boaters to always wear a life jacket. It notes that the No. 1 cause of boating fatalities is drowning, most often by "sudden, unexpected entry into the water."
