The ride-hailing service Lyft is adding a pronoun option to its app that drivers will use to address passengers.
The selection includes "They/Them/Theirs," "She/Her/Hers," "He/Him/His," "My pronoun isn't listed" and "Prefer not to say."
The policy change means that people like August Simon might be able to have one less anxious interaction when it comes to identity.
"Being misgendered hurts. I use 'they, them' pronouns, and when someone calls me 'she,' that feels bad," Simon says. "That's not something that I want to deal with every day."
Matt Rodrigues, of Lyft Greater New York says: "At Lyft, one of our core values is to 'be yourself.' We're incredibly excited to celebrate and acknowledge the many important eras, people, moments and events that have led to this celebration and show our support for the LGBTQ+ community."
Lauren Corcoran-Doolin, of Long Island's LGBT Network, says Lyft's decision to let riders choose a pronoun will also send a positive message to LGBT youth, who she says are more vulnerable than others when it comes to being misgendered.
Lyft is partnering with the LGBT Network and offering discounted rides to the 2019 Long Island Pride festival.
Lyft says it's the first ride-sharing company in the U.S. to offer pronoun choices.
The company also says it's offering financial support for its transgender drivers, giving them $200 for name-changing fees.
