Lori Vouris, of Huntington, speaks to News 12 about triple negative breast cancer
A Huntington mother of two spoke with News 12 Wednesday - the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month -- while getting her chemo treatment.
Lori Vouris is fighting for her life again after battling the disease a few years ago. She was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer.
"Mine was diagnosed in stage 4, so it's inoperable," said Vouris. "I never expected to be at a point in my life where I have to prepare to say goodbye to my kids."
Dr. Birjis Akhund says triple negative breast cancer cases are difficult to diagnose. Cases can occur suddenly, spread rapidly and can be resistant to traditional treatments.
Doctors say triple negative breast cancer isn't new. It accounts for about 20 percent of all breast cancer cases. That's about 200,000 cases a year worldwide.
One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
