Vigil held to remember 9/11 victimsWOODBURY - With only days until the congressionally imposed sequestration deadline hits, Long Islanders who responded to the Sept. 11 attacks could be hit the hardest if the sequestration goes through.
The sequestration would strip $29 million a year from the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act that provides health care for first responders who were sickened while working at Ground Zero.
Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) are proposing legislation that would exempt the act's funding from being affected by the sequestration.
“They volunteer to risk their lives for our safety. That's what veterans do, that's what the 9/11 responders did,” says Schumer.
