Police say a 70-year-old man who worked for decades in the Island Trees School District was found fatally stabbed inside his Levittown home.
Police say William Cahoon's body was found inside a bedroom on Friday. Officers responded to the home at 27 Shepherd Lane around 6:45 p.m. for a wellness check.
Butch Yamali, owner of the Milleridge Inn in Jericho, says Cahoon was a regular who always paid for his dinners in cash. He said employees realized on Friday that they hadn't seen him in almost two weeks. He says a manager knew Cahoon, having taken him home once, and checked on the home. He says the manager found an overflowing mailbox and the lights on and banged the door. No one answered, so he went back to the restaurant and the police were called.
Police say Cahoon was "somewhat of a hoarder," making it difficult to see inside the home.
On Sunday, an autopsy revealed that Cahoon was stabbed multiple times. Police say there were no signs of forced entry into the home and that they believe Cahoon was targeted. But there was no word on a possible motive.
Cahoon's sister-in-law Ellen says someone might have taken advantage of how sweet he was. She called him "harmless, gentle."
Cahoon recently retired as a custodian for the Island Trees School District.
