It was a big deal in history and it happened on Long Island: Charles Lindbergh's flight to Paris, France.

Hundreds gathered on the rainy Friday morning of May 20, 1927 to watch Lindbergh's Spirit of St. Louis take off from the Roosevelt Field runway, headed to Paris. Everyone eagerly awaited news of his arrival. And 3,500 miles and over 33 hours later, Lindbergh landed on a small, unlit runway in Paris, greeted by thousands.

Joshua Stoff, the curator at the Cradle of Aviation Museum, says the Spirit of St. Louis was designed specifically for Lindbergh's flight.

Now, a monument sits behind the Source Mall in Westbury that marks the spot where Lindbergh left the ground in 1927.
