The 10-year anniversary of New York?s Megan's Law and its legal implications have Long Islanders worried about the safety of their children.

The names of an estimated 241 level 1 and level 2 sex offenders in New York State could drop off the registry if lawmakers do not revise Megan's Law. The 10-year registration mandate for level 1 and level 2 offenders is set to expire January 21. Local residents are pushing for state officials to revise the law to keep their families safe.

A bill proposed by Senator Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) will be voted on Monday. Under the proposed legislation, level 2 and level 3 sex offenders, whether currently registered or in the future, have to register for life. Level 1 offenders would be required to register for 20 years rather than 10. Assemblywoman Patricia Eddington said the state assembly is also expected to pass new legislation Monday.
