Long Islanders speak out on topic of illegal immigration
Long Islanders spoke out about illegal immigration Wednesday in response to a four-page statement released by Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY) calling for change.
In the document, Clinton says the current immigration system is dysfunctional and in need of reform. She says that some immigrants here illegally should be given the chance to stay as long as they pay taxes and abide by the law. Carlos Canales runs Workplace Project, an organization the helps day laborers find work. Canales agreed with Clinton, saying all those who want to work hard and support their families should be allowed to stay.
Critics say allowing any illegal immigrants in the country sets a bad precedent and wastes taxpayer dollars.
