Long Beach residents learned more about a planned medical facility that would not include a full service hospital.

The proposed 30,000-square-foot medical pavilion proposed by South Nassau Communities Hospital would replace the vacant Long Beach Hospital, which was destroyed in Superstorm Sandy.

"The hospital concept that they had in the past doesn't exist in the future. And we want to provide the services they need," said Dr. Josh Kugler, of South Nassau Communities Hospital.

Those services include a 24/7 emergency department.

The facility will not include in-patient beds. The hospital says other options will be decided after a medical needs assessment is completed this summer.

FEMA said it would give South Nassau $154 million to redevelop health services in Long Beach and on the South Shore. The hospital has said it would spend $20-40 million on the medical arts pavilion.



The hospital says once it gets approval from the state Health Department, it would take 18 to 24 months to build the facility.
