Several organizations are offering rewards for anyone with information about the person who killed a small dog by setting it on fire.
It happened at the Sandy Point Beach and Bird Sanctuary parking lot sometime between 10 p.m. Thursday and 1 a.m. Friday.
Police say they found the dead miniature schnauzer Friday morning. They estimate the dog was about 1 year old with cropped ears and a cropped tail. They say an accelerant might have been used. Detectives say this is now an animal cruelty and arson investigation.
Police released a photo Tuesday of a white truck parked in the area that night and requested the public's help identifying the owner. Police released a statement Wednesday saying they had located the owner of the truck and interviewed them but that they had no involvement in the incident.
The public is doing its part by offering various rewards for information leading to an arrest.
Administrators of the West Haven: Why Not? Facebook page has offered a $2,000 reward. The group Desmond's Army has offered a $500 reward. And the rescue organization Green Fur Kidz has collected about $14,000 in pledges. The owner of that group lives across the street from where the dog was found.
"Who does something like this?" asks Melissa Garthwait. "The person or people that did this is a killer and they will kill, not only animals, but children and people."
Anyone who may know something or may have seen anything suspicious is asked to call police. They are also looking to hear from anyone who may be missing a small dog.
