LIRR's 'Double Track' program gets green light

The LIRR says service is temporarily suspended between Jamaica and Hicksville after a non-passenger train struck an unauthorized person on the tracks in New Hyde Park. (January 16, 2013)

RONKONKOMA - The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) has announced that funding is in place for the first phase of the system's "Double Track" project.

The plan calls for an extra track between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma, where only one track runs and causes frequent delays in both directions.

LIRR officials say that the second track will shave minutes off the commute for most riders. They add that if there is a disabled train on the tracks, other trains will have a way to get around it.

LIRR officials say the first phase is expected to be completed by 2016, with a completion date for the second phase anticipated for 2018.

An information station has been set up at the Ronkonkoma LIRR stop.
