The Long Island Railroad president announced Monday the decision to delay a plan to ban cash-ticket transactions on trains.

Phillip Eng made the announcement at the MTA's LIRR Committee meeting. Eng says the plan to end cash transactions is on hold until a new fare payment system is put in place.

"One of the proposed reductions to eliminate cash sales onboard trains has been tabled for now until OMNY reaches the railroad," says Eng.

The move to go cashless was announced just three weeks ago. The plan would allow riders to pay cash at ticket machines and at ticket windows, but only with a credit card on board.

In a statement Eng elaborated on the decision saying, "We reviewed the comments received by the board and after deliberation, opted to withdraw the proposal regarding LIRR onboard cash sales. The proposal will be reviewed for inclusion when OMNY is introduced to the commuter railroads."

Some riders think using a credit card on the train is convenient.

The MTA had also said the program would mean the closure of some ticket windows on the Island.

MTA officials predict that the new fare payment system known as OMNY will be in place in early 2021.
