HEMPSTEAD - Long Island residents are bundling up and stocking up on winter clothing as bitter cold grips the island.

The extreme cold has led counties, towns and villages to open warming centers so residents without a warm place to stay a place to come in and get out of the cold.

Some businesses say that the extreme cold is affecting business by keeping customers from coming in.
