A Long Island landmark that is also a tourist attraction and a popular movie location could face the wrecking ball.

Nearly a century after it was built, the Hempstead House in Sands Point is in need of millions of dollars to save it from years of neglect.

Karlie Hagedorn, chairman of the Friends of the Sand Point Preserve, says work at the Hempstead House in the last year revealed damage to the building that was higher than the county had anticipated.

The $1 million Nassau County secured in a state grant for the initial renovation is a drop in the bucket compared to the $20 million Hagedorn says the repair job calls for.

Hagedorn says the house, which is one of four mansions on a 216-acre preserve, is vital to keeping the rest of the preserve afloat.

The Friends of the Sands Point Preserve is teaming up with Atelier Swarovski crystal to host a cocktail party this Thursday. That kicks off a three-day fine art jewelry fundraiser taking place this weekend.
