The whirlwind developments surrounding the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court have prompted plenty of reactions from Long Island’s residents and elected officials.

Alethea Shapiro is among the Long Islanders in Washington, D.C. She attended protests, and said she's glad Sen. Jeff Flake was confronted by sexual assault survivors after he announced he would vote in favor of Kavanaugh’s nomination.

The Republican senator then made a last-minute decision to call for a weeklong delay in the Senate vote to allow the FBI to investigate sexual assault claims made against the nominee.

“I think the elevator lady did it for us,” Shapiro told News 12.

On Long Island, elected officials told News 12 where they stand on the issue. Democratic Sens. Schumer and Gillibrand said the full vote should be postponed for allow the FBI to investigate. The same was true for Democractic Reps. Kathleen Rice, Tom Suozzi and Gregory Meeks.

Republican Rep. Peter King said he "supports the FBI investigating the matter within a reasonable amount of time." A spokesperson for Rep. Lee Zeldin said, “He believes a one-week delay sounds reasonable. Never ending is not reasonable if that is what some in the Senate are truly looking for.”
