Levittown teacher honored for saving a life
A local teacher received one of the state's highest honors Saturday for saving the life of one of her former students.
State Sen. Kemp Hannon (R-Westbury) presented the New York Liberty Award to Jennifer Mazzotta-Perretti, of Levittown, who donated one of her kidneys to Kevin O'Brian.
Perretti says although she never intended on being an organ donor, when her student asked for help, she didn't hesitate.
"I was willing to do what was needed to help a student, now a friend for life," Perretti says.
Following the transplant, O'Brian's health has taken a turn for the better. He says he wants to go into medicine and help others.
