An Amityville man is being held without bail after police say he sexually attacked two women in separate locations in Nassau County.
Levar Burton, 24, of Amityville, was arrested on Monday and arraigned on kidnapping and rape charges.
Authorities say the first attack took place on Dec. 29 in West Hempstead. Police say he forced a 21-year-old woman at gunpoint into her car and told her to drive. Upon arriving at an undisclosed location, police say he sexually assaulted her. According to court documents, Burton raped her after duct-taping her hands and face.
Police say the second attack occurred on March 7 in Great Neck. They say Burton was armed with a knife and approached a 39-year-old woman from behind. They say he sexually assaulted her and stole her cellphone.
Police say Burton delivers newspapers for MGR Partners LLC located on Terminal Road in West Hempstead. Police say it's the same street where the 21-year old woman was first approached at gunpoint. They say they are investigating the possibility Burton was working on his newspaper route during the attacks.
Detective Lt. Richard Lebrun says he is encouraging more potential victims to come forward.
When Burton was asked if he raped anyone, he shook his head "no."
"They're trying to ruin my life. I didn't do this," he said.
He didn't specify who was trying to ruin his life.
Burton's attorney says police made a mistake and that his client is being framed. He offered no explanation about the claim.
