Lawyer for man accused of weapon, drug possession claims collusion by authorities
A Commack school custodian was indicted Thursday on charges alleging he possessed a slew of weapons and drugs in the Patchogue home he shares with his parents.
Attorney Steven Politi came out swinging after the arraignment of his client, 30-year-old Patrick Musumeci.
"The current DA and the current police commissioner, they're in cahoots," Politi claims. "They're working together to taint jury pools."
At a news conference following the raid on Musumeci's home, Suffolk Chief of Department Stuart Cameron said that police seized brass knuckles, drugs and 16 guns, including two stolen handguns. Cameron clearly stated that eight of the weapons were legal. But Politi takes issue with authorities' representation of it.
"They grabbed guns, which were legally purchased, and put them on a table and tried to make everybody think that my client had an arsenal of weapons," Politi says.
Police executed that search warrant Feb. 6 on Wilmarth Avenue in Patchogue. Police said several neighbors had called Crime Stoppers to complain that pills were being sold out of the home.
In court Thursday, the prosecutor said police did find pills when they searched Musumeci's bedroom and a locker outside the room. The drugs seized allegedly included packets of oxycodone and other pills that are said to be a mix of fentanyl, methamphetamine and tramadol.
The Suffolk Police Department and district attorney's office declined to comment on Politi's claims.
Bond was set at $200,000 at Musumeci's arraignment. He remains suspended from his maintenance job in the Commack School District.
