New York state is being called on to repave pothole-ridden entrance and exit ramps in the Town of Brookhaven and along the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway.
Even though the winter weather hasn't really hit Long Island yet, aside from a powerful November storm, Brookhaven Town Councilman Daniel Panico says pesky potholes are already appearing along some LIE and Sunrise Highway exit ramps.
Panico recently sent a letter to the state Department of Transportation after multiple residents complained about blowing out tires and damaging rims on pothole-strewn exit ramps. Though he says DOT crews do respond to patch roads when needed, streets can still be rough.
Lawmakers say patching exit ramps is just a temporary solution. They say the state needs to completely repave them.
A state DOT spokesperson tells News 12 that it's keeping an eye on the ramps but repaving may not happen this season.
"While these areas are not on the current NYSDOT capital program, we expect to make improvements there in the future," the spokesperson said in a statement.
New York will pay for tire damage that occurs on state roads. However, it will only pay if the damage occurs from May 1 to Nov. 15.
