The calls to shut down a water rate hike in South Nassau are growing louder.

Lawmakers joined residents Tuesday to call on the state to reject a proposed rate hike by Liberty Water

As News 12 has reported, the hike would add $18 a month on to some bills.

"If people can't afford to pay their water bills that's something we have to take very, very seriously," says Leg. Debra Mule.

In a statement to News 12, Liberty says the rate hike request reflects costs that are already fronted to update infrastructure and improve service.

If approved, the rate hike would take effect in March 2024.
